5 Best Mother-daughter Trips Around the World

1. Puerto Rico

Mother-daughter pairs seeking to refuel in nature will find Puerto Rico to be another destination with its abundant vegetation, wildlife, and waterfalls on tropical treks in El Yunque National Forest. To cool off, jump into a swimming hole or arrange a zip-line trip to feel the rush of flying through the forest canopy. Then head to one of the three bioluminescent bays in Lajas, Fajardo, or Vieques to go kayaking under the bright dinoflagellates. It can also be enjoyable to just meander around Old San Juan while nibbling on piraguas, or shaved ice.

2. North Shore, Oahu

While it is difficult to have a terrible day in Hawaii, the North Shore of Oahu may offer the calmest days. Come for a break and incredibly beautiful seas; there are no malls or contemporary complexes here, which has long been shielded from major development. One excellent place to stay near Kawela Bay’s pristine sand is Turtle Bay Resort. Snorkel at Turtle Bay, Kuilima Cove, Shark’s Cove, or Three Tables; the latter two are ideal for novice divers. Hike through verdant rain forest to Waimea Falls, making time to stop for traditional (and kid-friendly) local fare. Guavas, rambutans and lychees abound at roadside fruit booths. Eats on the island must include Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck in Haleiwa and Matsumoto Shave Ice.

3. Banff, Canada

Its accessible glaciers, geothermal springs, and blue alpine lakes all awe. If you stay at the castle-like Fairmont Banff Springs—possibly the most magnificent hotel I’ve ever stayed in—you can come back to the comfortable beds and great on-site eateries after each long day of exploration. A trip to the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse, which is 3.5 miles in, from Lake Louise takes you through a spectacular glacier valley. You can expect jam and biscuits or soup baked in house. The following day, visit the stores and restaurants in Banff and Lake Louise communities or relax at Banff Upper Hot Springs. Other activities you really must do while in the area are kayaking on Emerald Lake or Moraine Lake.

4. Machu Picchu, Peru

For a teenager, trekking to the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu is an incredible and once-in-a-lifetime event. Even though the Inca Trail is 26 miles long and occasionally very steep, if completed over several days as is the usual approach, it is not an impossible challenge. Arrange a four-day, three-night (or longer) trip with a reputable outfitter, and prepare for breathtaking scenery. Topping the bonding experience of seeing the sunrise over the ruins, which are situated about 8,000 feet above sea level, will be difficult.

5. Mendocino County, California

Come to enjoy the stunning coastline of the Golden State and to relax beneath California’s unique redwood trees. You can travel through the woods on the venerable Skunk Train, which is a relic of a decommissioned rail system used for forestry. Alternately, take a two-mile circle hike in Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve to explore the forest on foot. Then, while meandering through Mendocino Headlands State Park, look for sea glass at Glass Beach and take in the stunning views of the ocean and the flowers.
